!EDUCATION:
Larry, started his schooling in Burbank, WA, then to a country school in
Montana for a time, at Haywarden, east of Geraldine about 10 miles walked 2
miles each way to school. Then we went to a country school in Rooks county
Kansas, for a year and then back to the country school in Montana at Haywarden
and after about 3 more years at Haywarden, moved into town and went to school
in Geraldine. Cecil moved to Washington, and Larry started the Eight Grade in
Spokane, and finished it in Winona, WA. Then they moved to Shady Cove, OR and
he went to 4 years of High School at Eagle Point, OR.
!OCCUPATION:
He worked as a logger for a time, and then moved to Seattle to find steady work
and went to work at Boeing Aircraft. Larry worked as a helper and later as a
Welder on an Electronic Spot Welding Machine.
!Larry worked then for a couple of years as a Short Order Fry Cook, and Waiter
at a place called Hasty Tasty, in the University District of Seattle.
!Returned to Boeing Aircraft, after losing his job at The Hasty Tasty, because
his oldest child was born on Thanksgiving Day, a day scheduled to be a day off
for one of the bosses.
!MILITARY SERVICE:
Was on active duty US Army in Korea, being released as an E5, working as a
Transportation Specialist while in Korea.
Larry was living in Seattle, WA (draft board was in Medford, OR) and he
decided to join the US Navy to beat the draft, but a few days before he was to
be sworn into the Navy, he bought a motorcycle. The first day that he had the
new to him "Tiger" TRIUMPH, an English mortorcycle he went trail riding with
friends in an area called Carkeek Park in Seattle. Unbeknownst to Larry, the
front brake cable had broken between the time he bought the cycle in the
afternoon, and abt 11:00 PM that night. Larry and his friends were riding down
hill, on a trail that overlooked a coastal cliff, it was about 40 feet to the
bottom of the cliff and at the bottom was a set of railroad tracks. The trail
was steep, and it was a very dark night and as Larry had never been on a
trailride before he was in 1st gear idling the motor and was putting pressure
on the rear wheel brake, to keep from going to fast. A rather large rock about
the size of a human head was in the trail and he did not see it in time to
avoid it. When he hit the rock, it made the cycle veer to the right. That was
not where he wanted to go, because the edge of the cliff was that direction.
Larry pulled on the front wheel brake, (on motorcycles, that is on the right
handle bar) that brake cable was broken, so all it did was to point the cycle
more to the cliff, with the edge fast approaching. Then Larry had a stoke of
genius and reached with his right arm across to the left handle bar to touch
the engine kill button, but when he did, the leather jacket (black) sleave
rubbed against the handle bar grip on the right handle bar (that's the
throttle). The front of the cycle raised up off the ground, with that burst of
speed and he sailed off into space on the rear wheel. At the bottom though was
the railroad tracks and they stopped the fall beautifully. The only problem
was that Larry landed on his side on the railroad tracks, just ahead of the
cycle (which was still running). Actually Larry was still hanging onto the
handle bars and was still sitting on the seat, but his side hit the tracks and
Larry and the cycle went sliding down the tracks. The friends soon came to
Larry's aid and friend Donald Mum being in a rush to get the cycle off of Larry
grabbed the exhaust pipe with one hand and pulled the cycle off. Donald had a
serious burn on that hand, but they did get the cycle and Larry separated and
leaned both Larry and the cycle against the bank by the railroad tracks.
Donald was very worried about the blood running out of Larry's ear, and in fact
caused Larry to regain consciousness with his worried talking, just as a train,
(don't remember the kind), came roaring by on the tracks.
!The friends commandeered two lovers in the Park and their car to take said
motorcycle rider to the hospital, They took him to Harbor View County Hospital
and they were having a night full of knifing victims, but had not room
available and so they sent Larry to Sweedish Hospital. Larry eventually healed
up, but in the meantime had missed the swearing into the Navy, and had in fact
missed the Army induction as well. So with pins in broken bones, and ribs
bound, presented himself to the Army Doctors. They said he should not go
right then, because he was nervious. They were right.
!What happened to the motorcycle you say. Well the tip of one handle bar grip
was cut and needed to be replaced.
!Knifing victim's were mentioned, because when Larry arrived in Korea, at a
place called Socho-Ri, one of the bunk mates for the next year was a fellow who
spoke to him that night at Harbor View Hospital and tried to relax the
tensions. He was a black man, who had brought his brother in-law, to the
hospital. He had been one of the knifing victims.
!Larry, did eventually get drafted by the Army, he had to go first to Medford,
Oregon to the Draft board, they put him on a bus back to Seattle, to the same
place where the Doctors earlier said he was nervous, and after a quick once
over was sworn into the Army, put on a bus to Ft Lewis, just outside of Tacoma,
WA, processed (you got your shots) to be sent to Basic training at Ft Ord, CA.
!They sent Larry to an 8 week light weapons basic training company, but in the
last week of Basic, Larry had to be hospitalized with measles, and before he
could get out of the hospital, he got scarlet fever, and had to spend more
time in the hospital. When he got out, he had to start basic training all
over, because he had not finished the first program. This time they put him in
an 16 week Heavy Weapons Basic Training program.
!From Ft Ord, it was off to Korea, (a truce had just been declared, maybe the
motorcyle accident saved his life) with a stop over in Japan, to do more
processing, and determine where he would be assigned in Korea. The Army, in
it's great wisdom determined, that they needed 16 (or there abouts)
replacements for the 593rd TTRD (thats Traffic Transportation Regulation
Detachment), so from the basic training company that Larry had been with last
they took K's and J's in alphabetical order and assigned them, to jobs that
normally requires about six months of specialized training at Ft Eustis, VA.
!We were assigned to 2 and 3 man outpost's across northern South Korea.
Larry's area, Socho - Ri was on the East Coast of Korea, and above the 38th
Parallel. Socho - Ri, was a Port (very primative), LST's could dock on a beach
and Cargo Ships had to be off loaded onto barges. Larry made reports on the
Ship traffic, and committed trucks from a Korean Truck Battalion for some
hauls, arrainged for rations and quarters for GI truck convoys, and manafested
passengers and frieght, at K-50 a dirt runway military airfield. The airfield
also was a primitive operation, when Larry spotted the C-47 twin engine
transport plane comming though the gap in the mountains, he would run outside
the runway shack, pull the pin on a smoke grenade and throw it out so that the
pilots could get the wind direction, and be able to determine their landing
approach. The US Airforce flew 4 days a week, and The Greek (Royal Helenic)
Air Force flew 3 days a week. One day when the Greek Air Force was flying, and
was in the glide path, just ready to touch down, a single engine spotter plane
being flown by a ROK (Republic Of Korea-South Korean pilot) made a take off in
the direction of the Greek C-47 that was landing. It was a narrow miss.
Everyone was cussing everyone else, and no one understood the words, but there
was no mistaking the meaning of what the Greeks were saying about the ROK's.
!OCCUPATION:
Worked at the Hasty Tasty after being released from the Army, this time he
married one of the Bosses Sisters. Later Larry worked at Boeing again, before
moving to Bend, OR where he worked for a Brother In-Law Boyd A. Litehiser. He
drove Gas & Fuel Oil trucks, and deliverd TBA, to the Texaco Service Stations
in the area.
!CHANGE OF OCCUPATION:
In 1965, Larry went into the Life & Health Insurance field, working exclusivly
for Grange Mutual Life Co for several years. In 1978 Larry was presented the
Charter Life Underwriter designation, that culminated a specialized 4 year study
course. In 1979 Larry branched out into The Property Casualty Insurance field
working mainly with drivers that have a hard time getting Insurance.
