!DESCENDENT:
A direct descendent of Gov John Endicott, of Mass Bay Colony - 1628.

!SOURCE:
A brief Clark family history, in the posession of Phyllis Tanner Dickson.

!Stephen Warren Clark was b the 20th of Sep 1874, the 5th child of George and
Sarah Clark. In 1909, Steve came out from IL to join his brother Jim on the
Square Butte Bench.

!Jim had come to Montana the previous year and had worked for Mr. Ross on his
ranch that lies where the town of Denton is now.

!Bob Kennon, was driving a bunch of horses from the Judith to the Highwood
country and had stayed over night at the Ross Ranch. Jim stood night watch on
the horses along with Sig Smith and Bob. Bob talked of the range north of the
Arrow Creek and south of the Missouri River. As a result Jim went over to that
country and decided to homestead on the Square Butte Bench.

!There were not very many who had settled there yet, but one that was there was
Hobart Myrick.

!When Steve got there, he took out a homestead next to Jim's and a year later
the boy's sister's, Eillis and Georgia came west and each filed a claim joining
thos of Jim and Steve making a full section held by the Clark's. The house was
built on the section line to satisfy the requirements of the Homestead Act.

!Jim and Steve started the stage line to run from Fort Benton up over the "Hogs
Back" to Clear Lake - over to Hawarden and at that time to the "Lone Tree"
where the John Tanner place is now.

!One more sister, Alida, came out for a visit and she recalls the trip from
Fort Benton to Hawarden and then on to the Ranch, all in one day, as being long
and rough. Jim drove the stage that day.

!Alida decided to stay, so Steve and Jim helped her get her Homestead filed.
She was unable to get land joining that of her brother's and sister's.

!Marion Little, another early settler had a claim to the north and a bit east
of the Clarks. He and Alida Clark were married in the year 1913.

!The country was prospering and growing. There were many crops planted and of
necessity all had some livestock. Every where you looked there were fences.
The roads, mostly on the section lines, usually had fences on both sides. By
1911, Steve and Jim were on the upward trend and getting into the Stock
Business. They had quite a herd of horses and as a result Steve was becoming
quite a "Horse Trader" which served as an outlet to neighbors for miles around
the country.

!In 1914 or 1915 Steve and Jim's mother, Sarah came out from her home in
Ilinois and stayed until her death in 1916. Steve took her body back to Oconee
for burial in the Clark cemetery near there.

!Jim and Steve farmed the homestead together for eight years with Steve selling
to Jim who continued to farm the original four homesteads in addition to other
lands he had purchased. Jim served in World War I in France. On 22 Oct 1927,
Jim married Florence Stipe who was born at West Unity, Ohio. Their son, James
Gordon Clark, was born at Great Falls, Montana 1 Nov 1929, and he farmed with
his father until his father retired. James continues to farm the same place
today. Gordon's wife, Mary J. Wilson died 3 Aug 1968, leaving 4 children,
Cindy, James, Sharon, and Sheila.
