The International Genealogical Index has a record of the birth of the first
male in a family for Ammon Shipley, born 1818, spouse of Mrs. Susan Shipley.
The file number is F837011, serial/sheet number 0036.
The International Genealogical Index has a record of the marriage of an "Amond
Shiply" to Frances Hoop on June 17, 1840 in Muskingum County, Ohio. This would
have been a second marriage for Ammon and possibly for Frances Hoop as well.
Based on the 1850 census (below), Ammon would have been 40 and Frances Hoop
would have been 50 at the time of the marriage. The source for this marriage is
file number M514502, serial/sheet number 1887.
In the 1850 Census, Aman Shipley, Sr. was age 50, living in the Harrison
Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, household number 717 with his wife Frances,
age 60. Muskingum is near Guernsey County, Ohio and may formerly have been part
of that county. He was born in Pennsylvania. Assuming he is the same Aman
Shipley as the one in 1820, he would have been 20 in 1820, consistent with the
age of the Aman Shipley in 1820. Living in the household, all born in Ohio,
were: Morgan H., age 18; William, age 16; Rachel, age 4; Nancy, age 5;
Emeline, age 3; Elisen, a female aged nine months.
The International Genealogical Index has a record of the marriage of Ammon
Shipley and Susan Coy in Elkhart County, Indiana, on September 14, 1843. The
the source for this marriage was film number 5011255, serial/sheet number 54.
This same information was found in an Elkhart County marriage index sent to me
by a resident of Elkhart, Tom Stevens.
In the 1850 census in Jackson Township, Elkhart County, Indiana, Ammon Shipley,
32, a carpenter, born Ohio, lived with Susan, age 34, born Indiana, and three
children: Peter L., age 6; Sarah M., age 4, and William Henry Harw?, age 2.
In the 1860 Census in Jackson Township, Elkhart County, Indiana, Aman Shiply,
age 40, born in Ohio, a carpenter, appears with his wife Susanna, age 43, born
in Pennsylvania. Both could read and write. Their children were Peter L., age
14; Sarah M., age 13; William H., age 11; David, age 9; Almira J., age 7;
Edward M., age 2, all born in Indiana.
An Elkhart County marriage index shows that William H.H. Shipley married Mary
E. Lawrence(?) April 25, 1863.
In the 1870 Census, New Paris, Jackson Twp, Elkhart Co., IN, Amos Shipley,
carpenter, age 52, b. Ohio, had property valued at $150. His wife, Susan,
age 54, b. Ohio. William, age 22, was a carpenter. Mary, age 22, (probably
his wife) was b. Ohio. Alonzo, age 19, was a farmer, b. IN. Robert, age
9, b. IN., Ellen (probably William's daughter), was 5/12 (born in March of
1870.
No Shipleys appear to have died in the area.
