Hiram Goff, born at Augusta, N. Y., March 5, 1807; died at Deansboro, 1891.

Obituary

HIRAM GOFF

Hiram Goff died at the residence of his son-in-law, George B. Northrup of
Deansville, Wednesday. Mr. Goff was born in the town of Augusta in 1807 and
lived there till 1859, when he removed to Deansville, where he afterwards
resided. Early in life he united with the First Congregational church of
Augusta, and at the time of his death he was a member of the Congregational
church of Deansville. In 1833 Mr. Goff married Irene C., daughter of Isaac
Miller, who died in Deansville in October, 1882. One daughter survives them,
Mrs. George B. Northrup, with whom her father passed the last years of his
life. He also left an adopted son, Miller C. Adams of Phelps, N. Y.

It would require something more than common places to do justice to the
character of Mr. Goff. His practical wisdom, thoroughness and success as a
farmer, his untiring industry down to the last ten days of his life, his
culture, good sense and general intelligence, his genial companionable disposi-
tion, his sterling integrity, the consistency, beauty and fidelity of his
Christian walk, and the general affection and regard in which he was held by
all who knew him, marked him as a man of unusual worthiness.

Mr. Goff was of Puritan stock, his father coming from the "land of steady
habits." He was of the family of that Colonel Goff who is famous as one of
the judges of Charles I, as the deliverer of Hadley, and whose portrait
Hawthorne has drawn as the "Gray Champion." Mr. Goff was in all things -
blood, morals and religion - a Puritan, a type of the ideal New Englander in
New England's best days.

His funeral will be held at the house of Mr. Northrup to-day at 11 A.M.
