WELL KNOWN FARMER DIES OF PARALYSIS

John S. McDowell, Born In Concord Township 63 Years Of Age
Was Active In Grange Work

John S. McDowell, a well-known farmer who was born in Concord Township
sixty-three years ago, died at his home, two and one-half miles south of
Elkhart on the Prairie Street Road, at 3:45 o'clock yesterday. Death was
caused by paralysis from which Mr. McDowell had suffered since March, 1913.
He had suffered several strokes, and last Sunday was compelled to retire
to his bed, being unable to speak or to swallow.

The funeral services will be held at the home at 1:30 o'clock Sunday. The
burial will take place in the South Prairie street cemetary.

Mr. McDowell, who was a son of William McDowell, a pioneer of the county,
was born in a farm near the home where he passed away, on October 10, 1852.
On January 13, 1886, Mr. McDowell married Miss Mary M. Burkey, who survives
him. Other survivors are a son, Claude W. McDowell, who is at home; a
daughter, Mrs. Clayton Struble, who lives near the family home; a brother
George A. McDowell, who lives on the homestead, and three sisters, Mrs. Lucy
E. Kauffman and Mrs. Alvira Stone of this city, and Mrs. Emma Neu, who lives
just southwest of the city. A grandson, Robert Struble, is living. Mr.
McDowell was an active member of the Fairview Grange.
