James Franklin was in the 1820 Census, Springfield Twp, Clark Co., OH,
p. 9. His name in this census is spelled "Francklin." In that census
his family matches up as follows:
James Franklin and his wife are shown as 26-44.
An unknown Franklin was shown as 10-15.
Elizabeth Franklin (abt 13) was shown as 10-15.
George Washington Franklin (age 5) was shown as under 10.
Emeline Franklin (abt 9) was shown as under 10.
Malvina Franklin (abt 3) was shown as under 10.
John L. Franklin (abt 2) was shown as under 10.
James Franklin was in the 1830 Census, Springfield Twp, Clark Co., OH, p.
125. In that census his family matches up perfectly except that the oldest
daughter, Elizabeth, was probably not in the family.
James Franklin and his wife are shown as 40-49.
George Washington Franklin (age 15) was shown as 20-29.
Emeline Franklin (abt 19) was shown as 15-19.
Malvina Franklin (abt 13) was shown as 10-14.
John L. Franklin (abt 12) was shown as 10-14.
William Franklin (abt 10) was shown as 10-14.
Pearson W. Franklin (abt 4) was shown as 0-4.
In "Our County, Delaware," by John S. Ellis, published in 1898, is the
following on page 114:
"September 13, 1831, James Franklin entered the east half of the southeast
quarter, where he made his future home. He was the father of P.W. Franklin and
the grandfather of C.P. Cary and Loan Franklin and also of Mrs. W.W. Shirk."
James Franklin was in the 1840 census, Delaware Co., IN, p. 543.
James Franklin and his wife are shown as 50-59.
George Washington Franklin (age 25) was shown as 20-24.
Emeline Franklin (abt 19) was shown as 20-29.
John L. Franklin (abt 12) was shown as 20-24.
William Franklin (abt 10) was shown as 15-19.
Pearson W. Franklin (abt 14) was shown as 10-14.
One inconsistency is that in the 1880 census, William Franklin put down
that both parents were from Virginia. However, the 1850 census appears to
show that James and his wife Margaret were born in Pennsylvania. It appears
that they were married in Virginia. This may have been enough for the son
to conclude that they were from Virginia in the 1880 census. Pearson W.
Franklin, a known son, did not put down where his parents were from.
In the 1850 census, Centre Township, Delaware County, 1850, page 809, is James
Franklin, age 63, born in Pennsylvania, and his wife Margaret, age 54, also
born in Pennsylvania. He was a farmer with real estate valued at $3,500. He
could read and write. There is a female, age 15, named Nancy Campbell living
with them. Her place of birth is unknown and she was probably a servant.
Census records for 1860, 1870, and 1880 show clearly that the P.W. Franklin
(Pierson/Pearson W. Franklin) is a different person than the father of Earl
Franklin and the children mentioned above appear in census records for those
years. Assuming James Franklin is Earl Franklin's grandfather, this P.W.
Franklin would be an uncle of Earl Franklin's.
