Notes

Sarah Harlan was born in Geneseo, Henry County, Illinois. Her father died
when he was 22 years old and Sarah was one year old. She was raised by her
mother and stepfather, Nathan Bolin. Her mother and stepfather had five
children. They divorced and he had three more children while living in
Sweetwater, Texas.

Sarah Harlan's grandfather was a Quaker who converted to the Universalist
faith, which was the faith of her father. Her mother was a Baptist. Sarah
adopted the Christian Science religion which was started in 1875 by Mary Baker
Eddy. As a result of believing in this religion, medical treatment was not
used even to treat serious diseases and medical problems.

Sarah had twelve children. After her husband died she moved to 3310 R. Street
in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she lived until she died of a cerebral hemorrhage,
unattended by a physician because of her Christian Science beliefs, on
September 24, 1930. She was buried in Elyria, Nebraska.

On a map in 1875, Sarah Harlan owned 117.3 acres in Henry County and her
husband John Tully owned 37 acres in an adjacent farm.
