JOSEPH ROGERS, son of Thomas and Elizabeth(?) (-----) Rogers, was born
in England or Holland in 1610 or earlier; died between 2 and 15 Jan. 1677/8;
was buried in Eastham in Old Cove Burial Ground. He married HANNAH -----
who he mentioned in his will. She may not have been his only wife or even
the mother of his children. However, the name Hannah was used repeatedly
in subsequent generations, making her position as mother, grandmother, etc.,
very likely.
Joseph came to Plymouth with his father on the Mayflower in 1620 when
he was ten or twelve years old. Many branches of the Rogers family hold
the tradition that Gov. Bradford took Joseph into his home after Thomas
died in the winter of 1620/1. In the 1623 land division he received two
acres, one on behalf of himself and another on behalf of his father. Joseph
became a freeman in 1633, and received permission on March 2, 1635/6 to
operate a ferry near his house across the Jones River. In 1636 he was first
recorded as serving on a jury. Joseph was granted 30 acres of land in 1638,
and became a constable of Duxbury on March 3 1639/40. He and his brother
John were each granted 50 acres of upland on April 6 1640.
Joseph moved to Eastham, then known as Nauset, and on June 1 1647 was
appointed lieutenant with the duty of exercising the men at arms there.
He apparently lived briefly in Sandwich in the early 1650's. He served on
the council of war during 1658, was freed from his lieutenancy in
1661, but reestablished in 1664. In 1670 he was a selectman in
Eastham.
A copy of Joseph's will, recorded in the Plymouth Colony Record Book at
the time of his death, designates his son Thomas Rogers as "whole and sole
executor," and makes specific bequests to his sons: Thomas, John, and
James Rogers; to his daughters: "Elizabeth higgens" and "Hannah Rogers";
and to "Benjah higgens my Grandchild on Condition hee live with mee untill
I die." He also willed that ten shillings of his estate "be disposed off
for the use of the Church of Christ in Eastham as shalbe Judged most
Nessesarie." and he provided for the comfort and security of his "Loveing
wife hannah Rogers" for "as longe as shee lives."
Joseph's inventory was taken 15 Jan. 1677/8, and the will was
probated 5 March 1677/8. Interestingly, there is no mention of
Joseph's daughter Mary in the will. Son Thomas Rogers died
before the estate was completely settled, so son John Rogers and
Capt. Jonathan Sparrow were appointed to conclude the settlement.

John Jackson Tully was born on January 18, 1845 in Preston Township,
Wayne County, Pennsylvania to an Irish father, Patrick Tully and a
mother born in Pennsylvania. He may have been named after Andrew
Jackson who was President from 1829 to 1837 and who was a popular
President of that time who was also of Irish descent.
1850 Census, Preston Park, Wayne Co., PA, p. 31.

In the 1850 census Patrick Tully's property was valued at $1,000.
The census shows that Patrick could not read or write. All the other
members of the family eventually could. Life must have been very hard
on this farm because seven of the 14 children died of various infectious
diseases in childhood.

In this census he is listed as "Jno" or Jonathan. 1860 was the year
the Civil War began. He would have been the right age to fight in the
Civil War during the middle of the Civil War. However, I have not
found any evidence he ever enlisted. He is not listed in any of the
lists of veterans when he lived in Illinois and Nebraska.
Living immediately next door was the family of James Tully, also from
Ireland. He appears to be a brother of Patrick Tully's. The family
names are all very similar.

He was in the 1870 census, Preston Park Twp, Wayne Co., PA, p. 244, age
24, b. PA. He is shown as "John."
On October 4, 1873 John's father died. A year later he married Sarah
Irena Harlan on August 25, 1874 at Henry County, Illinois. Several of
his sisters and brothers appear to have moved with him since they
appear in the 1880 census and afterward.

Around 1888 the family moved to Elyria in Valley County, Nebraska.
While there John Jackson did very well with his business of farming and
stock trading. At the point of his death in 1901 he had become a very
prosperous man. I have been told he was something of a wheeler-dealer.
He would often travel to the South to buy cattle and then transport
them north to sell them at higher prices.

The 1900 census showed John and Irena Tully had been married 25 years
and had had ten children, seven of whom were living.
John Tully was also well known for his psychic abilities. He once
travelled immediately home and asked about one of his children who
had nearly drowned.
In 1901 he died unexpectedly while on a businss trip to Omaha,
Nebraska. Unfortunately, he did not forsee his own death and he died
without a will. His children fought each other for a great many years
trying to get their fair share of his properties and this caused a lot
of bitterness in the family. Many of the children lived much of their
lives mostly living on their shares of what they inherited. Only four
of the children married and two of those marriages quickly ended in
divorce.
When he died he owned lots of property. Among the property was 400 acres
of land in Marengo County, Alabama. I have always wondered how and why he
owned land in Alabama. I searched but did not find any Tully relatives
who lived in the area. It may have been simply an investment. Irena
Tully had 180 acres of land in Illinois. This was land she owned and had
inherited from her parents. She sold it in 1896.
