JOHN ROGERS, son of Thomas and Elizabeth(?) ----- Rogers, was
born in England or Holland ca. 1614; died in Duxbury between 26
Aug. 1691 and 20 Sept. 1692. He married ANNA CHURCHMAN in Ply-
mouth 16 Apr. 1639. She was living in May 1665, probably still
alive in Aug. 1670. Her parentage is unknown.
John was still living in Leiden, Holland, with his mother and
probably sisters, in 1622. He came to New England about 1630
with the last group from the Leiden Pilgrim community. In 1634
he bought land in Duxbury, and was also granted 50 acres in 1640,
as was his brother Joseph.
John served on a jury for the first time in 1641, was made
a freeman between 1662 and 1685. As one of the "ancient freemen,"
he was given land in 1662 on the northerly sife of Taunton. In
1664 he sold half is meadow northwest of "Joanes River," with
the consent of wife Anna. This is the only time she is called
by name except at their marriage.
In 1667 he was granted 100 acres on Coteticutt River, and in
1670 John Rogers of Duxbury weaver "and his wife" acknowledged
a deed made in 1654, through which he sold the 50 acres
granted to him in 1640. He sold another 100 acres in 1673. His
last recorded land transaction was the sale of an acre of his
Duxbury land to Wrestling Brewster, acknowledging his signature
in 1685.
The original will of John Rogers, probated 20 Sept. 1692, is
no longer in existence, but the copy entered in the records of
Plymouth Colony at his death appoints his son John Rogers as
"sole Executor and Administrator," and provides bequests to his
grandsons: John Rogers, John "Tisdall," and Joseph and Edward
Richmond; to his daughters: "Anne Terrey," Abigail Richmond,
and Elizabeth Williams; and to his granddaughters: "Elibeth,"
Ruth, and Sarah Rogers, and Hannah Bradford.
Children, prob. all b. Duxbury:
1. John, b. ca. 1640
2. (H)anna, b. bet. 1640 and 1650.
3. Abigail, b. ca. 1640.
4. Elizabeth, b. bef 1652.
