!John, was a Wheat and Cattle farmer, and lived on a farm next to brother Bill,
who was his partner.
John, also was an airplane person. His ranch, was known as Lone Tree, and at
one time it was a Stage Coach stop.
!The location of Bil and John's farms, was on the lower flanks and valley in
front of Square Butte, SE of Geraldine about 10 or 15 miles.
!John and Wilbur was raised by their Grandmother, Sarah J. Clark, in the
Clark Home. They appear in the 1910 census.
!The Cecil Kee ranch (Charles Ross Kee homestead) was about ten miles east of
Geraldine.

!John Tanner was born in Illinois and left there by train in 1914, with his
brother Wilbur, grandmother Sarah Clark and aunt Georgia Clark, to join uncles
Steve and Jim Clark and aunts Ellis, and Alida, who had taken up homesteads on
Square Butte Bench. They arrived at the ranch in April by stage from Fort
Benton.
!John attended the Nelson school with Maude Hume as our 8th grade teacher and
graduated from Great Falls business college.
!He enlisted in the Air Service October 10, 1917, and was sent to Kelly field,
Texas; Omaha, Nebraska and Morrison, Virginia. He boarded ship for France July
1, 1918, and returned to the States May 20 1919. Discharged at Camp Grant, IL,
he arrived back in Geraldine June 10, 1919. John worked for Steve Clark until
Sept 1, 1919 and attended Agriculture College at Bozeman, Montana.
!John and Mary were married on 28 Oct 1921. They purchased the Hans Anderson
lands Sept 1, 1921 in partnership with brother my Wilbur and later purchased
the Wilson Ranch, known as Lone Tree. Wilbur lived at the Anderson Ranch and
John and Mary at Lone Tree. Then some years later they purchased the Frields
Ranch.
!The Lone Tree Ranch, was all Virgin soil, except for a few acres planted to
Alfalfa.
!Mary came with her mother and sister to Lone Tree by Stage Coach from Fort
Benton, when she was five years old. The spent the night there, it was a Stage
Inn at the time, and their destination was Stillwells. They spent two weeks
there and then another night at the Inn, and then traveled back to Fort Benton.
On their way, they had lunch where the Paul Rudin home is now.
!Mrs. Kingsbury and daughter Mary were also on the coach, bound for their home,
which is now the Clyde Corley place. They all stayed at the Grand Union Hotel
and left Fort Benton at 6:00 a.m. and reached Lone Tree at 4:30 p.m.
!The four daughter's of John and Mary (Fontana) Tanner, were born and raised at
Lone Tree and graduated from Geraldine High School. Doris lives in Hawaii,
Phyllis in Prescott, Arizona, Connie and Mitzi in Denver.
