In the 1850 census, Coshocton County, Tuscarawas Township, there was
a John McConnell married to a Mary Jane McConnell, both born in Ohio.
He was 22 years old, a laborer. She was 20 years old. They had a
child, two months old named Samuel McConnell. Since the census was
done in June, 1850, the son would have been born around March of 1850.
In the 1860 census, Shelby County, IL, Cold Springs Township,
John McConnell is listed as "Jno"-- Jonathon McConnell, age 33, a
laborer born in Ohio. His wife is Mary J. The census shows he owns
no real estate but did own property worth $200. His wife is Mary J.,
age 31, born in Ohio. His first son is Samuel McConnell, age 11,
born in Ohio. He has a daughter, Malona McConnell, age 4, born in
Illinois and a son, Jacob R. McConnell, age 1, also born in Illinois.
In the 1880 census, Shelby County, IL, Tower Hill Township,
there was a John McConnell, aged 52, married to a Mary J. McConnell
aged 41 (she underestimated). John McConnell was born in Pennsylvania
and both of his parents were born in Pennsylvania. She was born in
Ohio, her father born in Virginia and her mother born in Kentucky.
The lived on Fillmore Street in Tower Hill township, Shelby Co., IL.
They had two sons living with them-- Jacob R. McConnell, age 21, who
could not write and Thomas L. McConnell, age 9, who was in school.
John and Jacob were both listed as farmers.
There was a John McConnell in Company H of the 116th Illinois U.S. Infantry
who signed up from Oconee, Illinois. He was a private. There is a history
of the 116th. They served under General Sherman. Per Civil War papers he
was 25 upon enlistment on September 9, 1962. He was 5'11" with gray eyes
and dark brown hair. He was married and a farmer. He was born in Green
County, Pennsylvania. Census data goes back and forth whether he was born
in Ohio or Pennsylvania, but the 1880 census shows Pennsylvania. It shows
his residence as Oconee, Shelby Co., IL. He was mustered out in Washington
D.C. on June 7, 1865. This matches because no children were born during this
time as seen in the 1880 census. Note: looking at his fellow soldiers who
enlisted at the same time, out of 21, only 7 served the entire term and
mustered out. Of the others 8 appeared to have died and the remainder
deserted.
