In the 1850 census, Peter L. Shipley appears, age 6, in the Jackson township,
Elkhart County, born in Indiana. Ammon Shipley was age 32, a carpenter,
who was born in Ohio. His wife, Susan Shipley, was age 34, born in
Pennsylvania. Also in the family was Sarah M., age 4, born in Indiana and
William Henry, age 2, born in Indiana.
In the 1860 census, Peter L. Shipley appears, age 14, in the Jackson township,
Elkhart, PA. "Amon Shiply" is 40, still a carpenter, born in Ohio. "Susanna",
Ammon's wife, is 43, born in Pennsylvania. The other children, all born in
Indiana, are Sarah M, age 13; William H., age 11; David, age 9; Almira J, age
7; Edward M. age 2.
In a marriage index for Elkhart County, there was "Peter Shopley (sic) married
Mary McDowell, Oct. 26, 1865" in Elkhart, County, Indiana.
In the 1870 census, he is listed under the name Louis Shipley. They lived in
New Paris Twp, Jackson Twp, Elkhart Co., IN he appears working as a stone mason.
He was 26, his wife, Mary was 23, and they had a daughter named Laura, age 3.
In the 1880 census for Marion County Kansas, the ages of Peter and Mary
Shipley's children indicate that they moved to Kansas sometime between 1872 and
1875. In that census, they lived on Washington Avenue, Marion Center Township,
Marion County, Kansas. Peter Shipley was a stone mason. Their children were
Laura Jane, 13, b. Indiana; Charles Anderson, 8, b. Indiana; Jennifer May, 5, b.
Kansas; Bertha Susanna, 4 months, born January, 1880, Kansas.
In the 1900 census Peter Shipley had returned to Indiana and was living in
Anderson City, Madison Co., IN. His wife was no longer with him, so she probably
died. Of his four oldest children, only Jennifer May Shipley still lived with
him. There were three new children, all born in Kansas: James, b. Apr 1882,
Maggie, b. Sep 1885, and Herbert, b. Jul 1888.
In the 1910 census Peter Shipley was married to a new wife, Laura, who he had
been married to for 10 years. They were living alone with an unrelated boarder.
He was working as a watchman.
