Beverly Joyce BROWN

!LIVING
Beverly grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska and graduated from high school there
with perfect grades. She attended Antioch College, paid for with popcorn
Louis Brown planted along roads. In Antioch she had the opportunity to
work in many jobs as part of her education. She worked at a newspaper,
a factory and a number of other jobs. She lived in the same dorm as
Coretta King, future wife of John Luther King. She married Jon McConnell
in Fremont after giving a couple of days notice. She lived in Washington
D.C. and then moved to Oregon where she helped support the family while
her husband finished a law degree. In Pullman she cared for her children
and also other children to help support the family. During the Johnson
Administration, she worked in a church group and started the first Migrant
Day Care program approved in the U.S. She was soon hired by the U.S.
Government to travel throughout the country and assist others in creating
Day Care programs. This led to a lifetime career where she worked as an
employee and consultant getting grants for education and doing evaluations
of educational programs. She set up an outstandingly successful program
where migrant para-professionals traveled with their students as the students
moved from Texas to Washington following the harvests. The program helped
the migrants perform above grade level while previously they usually dropped
out of school at an early age. Many of the program she started were dis-
continued when Nixon and Reagan worked to dismantle programs throughout the
country that helped people. Beverly finished a PHD in educational measure-
ment when she was about 50. She has won awards for outstanding achievement
including the WSU outstanding alumni award. She helped start the company
Unifine Milling, a company that makes whole wheat flour using a unique process
where the grain is exploded instead of stone ground. This results in a
whole wheat flour that is nutricious, excellent for baking bread and that
has a long shelf life.
