The surname McConnell is the most accurate English phonetic spelling of the name for the MacDonald Clan in Gaelic, "MacDhomnhuill." Early English documents usually refer to the MacDonalds as McConnells. Since McConnells share the same genetic ancestry as MacDonalds, Clan Donald USA is the place to go for DNA comparison. They have the world's largest DNA project. So far 30 McConnells and over 600 people with various spellings of McDonald have tested their DNA. Recent results show that some early U.S. McConnells with tens of thousands of descendants are direct descendants of the MacDonald Clan Chiefs and Somerled. This includes descendants of Alexander McConnell who died at Octorara Creek in 1729 (see the Brief Sketch below) and descendants of Robert McConnell (b. 1729) and Agnes Wilson/Nancy Boyd who lived in Elizabeth Twp, Allegheny Co., PA.
