Notes
William was justice of the peace at the time Bedford County, PA was formed in April, 1771.
Co-founder of McConnellsburg, PA, with his brother Daniel. The first public road through Fulton County was established by William McConnell in 1761, and amounted to a bridle path from Cove Gap to join Forbes Road near Breezewood. Today Route
s 16 and 30 (the Lincoln Highway) follow this early road.
He [Alexander Alexander] came to America alone in 1770, settling first in the Conococheague Valley among those of his own descent, Scotch-Irish. From William McConnell, November 1772, he purchased a tract of land in Wells Valley, "William McConnel
l Esq., of Ayr Township, County of Bedford, do make over a certain Tract, lying in Aughwick Valley, about three miles from the Great Road on the top of Sideling Hill, about 280 acres, undto Alexander Alexander of Antrim Township, County of Cumberl
and, for the sum of 30 pounds. In the presence of Robert Scott and Hugh Alexander".
On November 17, 1772, he sold to Alexander McConnell 280 acres in what is now Wells Township, which proved to be the best farm in Wells valley. This great cove was frequently referred to as McConnell's cove. William then moved on to Kentucky.
Per Mary Piatt's book "The McConnells of Pioneer Fayette County, Kentucky, p.33.: William McConnell settled in Leestown (Frankfort) along with his brother Andrew.
Here is the quote:
"William (known as Tanner) McConnell was the son of Robert McConnell of Fulton County, PA, and the nephew of Andrew and William McConnell who settled Leestown (Frankfort). Sarah McConnell January, (Tanner's first cousin) said in a Draper intervie
w that one of the other Lexington McConnells was her second cousin, and I believe this is probably the correct relation of Tanner to the other Lexington McConnells."
William was killed by Indians in 1780 as described in the following narrative:
"Uncle and father raised no crop that summer at Spring S. in the fall (1780) my uncle attempted his remove up to Field's S., above Harrod's S. had but 2 sons. One, Adam, was yet in Pat., now at Xenia. The oldest, Jas:, was in the canoe, w. hi
s f. Just buried him in the water, so that the indns: shodn't get his scalp. They had to leave the canoe. It was a wet rainsy morning, and they co'dn't get but that one gun off, or suppose all might have been killed. (Uncle Wm: was goin
g up in a canoe, with 4 other men. He had removed his family, and part of his other things, to Field's S., near Harrod's S., or beyond there, and had come down, perhaps to Louisville, gotten a canoe, and was making his way round to Spring S., whe
n 5 indns: that were concealed under a raft, shot Wm. McConnell, who was steering, in the head, and killed him,) (In the fall of 1780, this.) I heard the gun that shot some men on the trace from Louisville. He was stranger to us. Suppose he mus
t have been coming up. I was much alarmed, for my husband had started for the same place: but he hadn't (kept) the trace, and never heard the gun. I was down at one of the Springs at the time."
