Notes

James McConnell was born on his father's farm near Mechanicstown on
May 29, 1872. Not much is known about his youth because he was not
inclined to talk about it. He grew up on thwe farm in East Township,
later farmed by his brother. James worked as a farmer in the Salineville
arewa during his youth and early married life. Later he operated a feed
and farm supply store in Salineville. He served a mayor of the town for
two terms during the prohibition era. He lost sleep many a night while
serving in that office, cooperating with federal prohibition officers on
bootleg cases.

James marriedRosa Benson, a neighbor girl, on July 22, 1904. She was
the daughter of William Harrison Benson and Martha Missouri Benson. She
was born July 22, 1878. When they left Salineville, they moved to a farm
on Yellow Creek between New Somerset and Bergholtz in 1926. James lived
the rest of his life there. He died October 2, 1949. Rosa is stillbliving
there with her son Howard McConnell, who now owns it.

James and Rosa Benson McConnell had five children:
