Notes
The following was compiled from various online histories of Ayr Township Bedford County, PA and of McConnellsburg and in "A Brief Sketch of the McConnell Family"
Around 1743-1747 Adam McConnell and his sons Daniel, William, and Robert were among the earliest settlers of the area called Great Cove, which was originally called McConnell's Cove.
Per Pennsylvania land applications in 1748:
McCONNOL, Alexander and John for 100 acres surveyed 1 Mar 1747/8 adjoining the said survey of Adam McCONNOL now in their possession in Colerain Twp.
McCONNOL, Alexander and John for 50 acres adjoining Hugh BARKLY and Gabriel MORRISON in Colerain Twp. -to pay s 7.10
Four McConnells are mentioned are mentioned as residents of the Big Cove in May, 1750, by Secretary Peters in his report on trespassers in the area: William, Alexander, James, and Adam, William and Alexander McConnell were convicted of trespassi
ng.
From "A Brief Sketch": It is quite probable that the four brothers, William, Alexander, James and Adam McConnell, who settled in Great Cove in 1750 were the sons of Alexander, the original settler who had sons so named. The fact that there wer
e four brothers in what is now [about 1930] Fulton County in 1750 with the same names as four brothers in Lancaster County shortly before that year, makes it reasonable to assume they were the same brothers.
The land became legal to purchase when the government arrived at an agreement with the Indians on July 6, 1754. The Indians disputed the agreement so there was a period of war with the Indians.
In Pennsylvania Land Applications in 1766:
HACKONBURY, Henry August 1766 applies for 200 acres in Air Township Bounded by Richard STEVENSON on the East and by Adam McCONALE on North and John KARR on the West and a Mountain on South.
Before 1769 land could be purchased on credit called "by application" so that the McConnells owned land long before they obtained deeds to the land by warrant. In 1762 Daniel and William McConnell obtained the warrant to the land in what is no
w is McConnellsburg, PA and they founded the town. Adam McConnell and Robert McConnell, settled on land south of McConnellsburg in an area called Webster Mills. The Adam McConnell who owned the land may have been Adam McConnell, Jr. , who accomp
anied Robert McConnell to Allegheny Co., PA about 1769. Adam McConnell's land was owned by William Warthin in 1884; Robert McConnell's land was owned by William M. Patterson in 1884.
William McCONNELL was a justice of the peace at the time Bedford county was formed (1771). He sold out to his brother, Daniel, and moved west some time in the last century. The first public road through Fulton County was established by son Willia
m McConnell in 1761, and amounted to a bridle path from Cove Gap to join Forbes Road near Breezewood. Today Routes 16 and 30 (the Lincoln Highway) follow this early road.
Daniel McCONNELL, Sr., according to the testimony of his grandson, [Adam McConnell] kept a tavern, and had a large customer base of wagoners and packers long before the town was laid out. The tavern he owned is now a national historic site. Dan
iel's first wife was a Miss GRIFFITH, a Welsh lady. His second wife was the widow BECKWITH, to whom he left one hundred acres of his estate, which in turn was inherited by her children, the BECKWITHs.
A 1772 Ayr Township tax listed showed Adam McConnell, William McConnell, Esq., and Daniel McConnell. Robert McConnell was no longer listed. Per a Reverend Culbertson's account, Robert McConnell and his brother Adam McConnell were early settler
s (about 1769) in Elizabeth and Forward Twps in Allegheny Co., PA.
A 1774 Ayr Township tax list showed Daniel McConnell but not William McConnell. I am not certain if this was because the list might have been incomplete or if William McConnell had sold out to Daniel McConnell. Adam McConnell was listed under th
e category "inmates." The term "inmates" meant he was a boarder without property so he had evidently transferred or sold all his property by then.
The 1776 date of death for Adam McConnell is just an estimate.
A 1785 Ayr township tax showed Daniel McConnell owned 250 acres. Land was also owned by James McConnell and Alexander McConnell. Adam McConnell and William McConnell were not listed. It is assumed Adam McConnell had died by then and William ha
d moved west sometime between 1772 and 1785.
