Notes

According to a family tradition as told by a descendant, Virgil Colwell,
in "Defiance County, Ohio, History told in Pictures and Words of living
memory, 1991," Boseal Colwell was born in Troy, France about 1785. Census
records for both Boseal and descendants show he was born in French Canada.
Howver, according to Virgil Colwell, Boseal was an orphan and at age 10 he
went to Alberta, Canada, (then French Canada) with a Catholic priest. When
a young man he moved to Pennsylvania. He was in the War of 1812. Around
1820 he married Mary Elliott.

In 1833 Boseal was the first occupant of the Highland Township in Defiance
County, where he lived in a log cabin. Boseal settled east of Defiance
close to the Maumee river when the Indians were still there. This was
before 1840. According to family tradition, the Indians used to borrow
an iron kettle to cook fish. The Indians would never steal the kettle,
but they would never return it. The Colwells would go and get it since it
was always left where it was used.

Mrs. Colwell (2nd wife) said when the Indians ate fish they would swallow
the meat and auger the bones out the side of their mouth.

Mrs. Colwell told about their little dog barking at an isolated water hole
in the Maumee River bed, and when they investigated, there was a large fish.
They caught it and it was a ninety pound sturgeon.

Around 1850 Boseal's first wife died and he married Mary Ann Harter (called
"Polly") who was born in Kentucky on Mill Creek, probably near Lexington.
Her parents moved to Pickaway County, Ohio and then to Fort Amanda in Allen
County, Ohio in the 1820s. Her father was a soldier in the War of 1812.
In her obituary, she was said to be over 100 years old. However, census
records indicate she was born about 1814 instead of 1791 as was claimed in
the obituary.

Per Virgil Colwell:
"The Colwell name is sometimes spelled Colwell, Colwill, Colvill and
Colville. It was Colville in France and there is a little settlement
there by that name. The first Colwell left France and went to the Isle
of Guernsey. It is estimated there are only 6,000 Colwells in the United
States [1976]. Many names have over 100,000 and the Smiths around 300,000."
