Notes
Louis Clark Brown was born in Frement, Nebraska and graduated from high
school around 1910. About that time his family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska
where he attended the University of Nebraska for about three years studying
engineering but he did not graduate. In his early years Louis Brown worked
building windmills with his brother Harry Brown. Building windmills was a
social event and people would get together at night and sing and play
instruments. He was a good entertainer with a guitar and also the piano.
In 1916 he married Bashie Beth Tully and he went to work for the Burlington
Railroad at their shops in Havelock, Nebraska. He held many positions with
them starting in the shop as a machinist. Later he was foreman of the
machine shop and after that he worked in standards and later he traveled
to all Burlington shops sharing the best methods of each with the others.
In these years he traveled with his family on many road trips to places
like Niagara Falls and Minnesota.
In 1929 Louis quit the railroad and went to work for the state of Nebraska as
superintendent of maintenance for all highway equipment While in this position
he traveled to all parts of the state. He designed many special pieces of
equipment including the first motor grader used to maintain the state's mostly
gravel roads. He designed and built special equipment for the safety patrol
when it was started in Nebraska.
In 1942 he moved to Littleton, Colorado, to help Coleman Motors produce trucks
for the war effort.
Later he went to work at Thompson Pipe & Steel company in Denver where he
supervised construction of sea going barges that were built in sections that
could be moved by rail to the West Coast where they were assembled for use in
the war in the Pacific.
After the war Louis worked on the Tri County canal irrigating system at
Gothenburg, Nebraska for a couple of years. Later he supervised surveying
crews and helped in the design of the airport that was built at Kodiak, Alaska.
While in Alaska he found a Russian sword which is still in the family.
In about 1952 he bought an 80 acre farm near Panama, Nebraska and retired to
farming. While on that farm he had experiences with dairying, raising hogs,
fattening cattle, tending various crops and other frustrating adventures. About
1965 he sold that farm and bought a house in Lincoln. He also bought a 480 acre
farm near Ceresco, Nebraska, at that time. Bashie had a stroke Dec. 20, 1967
and another early in January. After that she was in a coma till her death
August 18th, 1968. Louis continued to live in the house till about 1984 at
which time he moved to a nursing home till his death January 4, 1989.
He was a religious man and a long time supporter of the Vine Congregational
church in Lincoln Nebraska. He was also a master mason for over 50 years.
He loved children, animals and he knew a lot about nature. His first efforts
at raising cattle were unsuccessful because he cared so much for the animals
he couldn't bear to sell them to a slaughterhouse. People were very important
to him and the people who knew him remember his kind, honest personality.
He is buried at the Ridge Memorial Cemetary at Fremont, Nebraska.
