Census Information, Fayette Co., PA
1790 Luzerne Twp
John McConnell: 1 male over 16, three females
On a Henshaw ancestry website I found the following marriages:
Margaret McConnell to James Henshaw, 1818
Ann McConnell to Levi Henshaw, Abt 1790
Margaret McConnell to Nicholas Henshaw, 1789
The Henshaws were in the Redstone Settlement which is near
Luzerne. There was an Alexander McConnell living in Redstone
settlement in 1810. The Henshaw site said the women were from
the south and Barbara McConnell, I think the wife of the Alexander
McConnell in the census, turned out to be from Virginia in the
1850 census. So this is an indication that our McConnells may
have come from further south. Another indication is that this
family frequently had the name Benjamin in it, and there was a
Benjamin McConnell living in Virginia at an earlier date who
could be a relative. Benjamin is a somewhat unusual name among
McConnells in general but a frequently used name among descendants
of John McConnell.
John McConnell doesn't appear in the 1800 census. The following
McConnells did appear:
1800 Luzerne Twp
George McConnall: 1 male 25-45, 1 male under 10. 1 fem 16-25.
1800 German Twp
Alexander McConnell: 1 male 25-45, 2 males under 10. 1 fem 25-45.
1810 Luzerne Twp
John Mc Connell: 1 male 45+, 1 male 10-15, 1 male under 10.
1 fem 45+, 2 fem 16-25, 1 fem 10-15, 1 fem under 10.
The male 10-15 is probably William Benjamin McConnell, b. about 1797.
The male under 10 is probably John McConnell, b. 1801.
1810 Redstone Twp (possibly related, but do not know how)
Alexander Mc Connell: 1 male 45+, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 10-15.
1 fem 45+, 2 females under 10.
1820 Luzerne Twp
John McConnell: 1 male 45+, 2 males 16-25, 1 male 10-16.
1 fem 45+, 1 fem 16-26, 1 fem 10-16.
Per the 1820 census, someone was engaged in manufacture.
Note: In this census record, Benjamin McConnell is crossed out and
John McConnell is written above it. This tells us Benjamin McConnell
was there. The census taker mistook him for the head of the household.
His name was actually William Benjamin McConnell but in many places he
is called Benjamin. Benjamin is not a common name among McConnells and
it has served to identify relatives.
Per a genealogy of the Rush family we know that William B. McConnell, who
was married to Catherine Rush, moved to Aleppo Twp, Greene County, PA
around 1825.
They lived in Greene Co., Aleppo Twp, PA, in 1830. In a biography about
Nancy McConnell, b. Sept 10, 1828, who married a man named Martin Ealy,
she said her father was Benjamin McConnell from Greene County, PA. After
a long unsuccessful search for a Benjamin McConnell I concluded it must
have been that William called himself Benjamin, his middle name.
1830 Aleppo Twp, Greene Co., PA, John McConnell
1 male 70-79, 1 male 40-49, 2 males 20-29, 1 male 5-9, 1 male under 5.
1 fem 60-69, 1 fem 30-39, 1 fem 20-29, 1 fem 10-14, 1 fem 5-9, 1 fem under 5.
By 1830 John McConnell was probably no longer farming and some of the people
in this household could easily be farm hands instead of relatives. Since
Jacob McConnell was born in Ohio in the late 1820s, probably the younger
John McConnell had moved to Ohio and was not in the 1830 census. The most
probable place that he moved to was Fox Twp, Carroll County, Ohio.
1830 Aleppo Twp, Greene Co., PA, William McConnell
William is listed in the same township, but about a page and half apart on
the census.
1 male 40-49, 1 male 5-9, 1 male under 5.
1 fem 30-39, 1 fem 10-14, 1 fem 5-9.
We know from the Rush family genealogy and other sources that Willima McConnell
move in the mid 1830s to Bristol Twp, Morgan County, Ohio near McConnellsville.
Possible relatives from nearby McConnells:
1820 Georges Twp, Fayette County, PA
(These people may be relatives, but I do not know how they are connected.)
They lived close by. The moved to what would become West Virginia
and they appear to have come from Virginia.
William McConnell: 1 male 26-45, 1 male under 10.
1 fem 26-45, 2 fem 10-16.
This family matches the family of Alexander McConnell. Probably Barbara was
Alexander McConnell's wife and he died by 1820.
Barbara McConnell: 1 male 16-26, 1 male 16-18.
1 fem 45+, 2 fem 16-26.
Neighbors: Before, Abraham Child, John Hayden, After, John Collins,
James Carr
