Notes

Edward McConnell was born near Belfast, Ireland in 1835. He is
thought to have been the eldest son of Francis and Mary (Smiley)
McConnell. He was the first of the family to come to America. He came in
1850 when he was 15 years old. His crossing of the Atlantic turned out to
be a trying ordeal. It took 13 weeks instead of the usual 3 to 6 weeks.
To make matters worse, the sailing ship was scarcely out of sight of land
when a case of Cholera was found on board. During the crossing, more than
half the passengers and crew died of the dreaded disease. The ship was
carrying cattle as well as passengers. They ran out of rocks from the
ships ballast to sink bodies. They were becalmed in mid Atlantic for 9
weeks. Day after day the ship's dead were dropped overboard at sunset,
only to float around the ship among the canvas enshrouded bodies of those
dropped overboard during the previous weeks. Those on board who had not
been directly exposed to the first cholera victim, were virtually
imprisioned in the ships cargo hold for the entire crossing. The only
daylight they saw was through a foot square ventilator opening in a hatch
cover. They were given tobacco to use in all forms, as the only
preventative that they knew for the disease. Edward was among those that
aquired the tobacco habit quickly and for life.

Upon arrival in Philadelphia, Edward McConnell worked first in a
sand and gravel pit, shoveling sand and gravel for 12 hours a day. He
"batched" and saved his money for two years. He sent the money to Ireland
for his brother Thomas's passage to America. The two of them then were
able in a couple of years to send for their sister Sarah's passage. After
Sarah's arrival the moved to the Pittsburgh area. Edward was hired to
manage a big vegatable gardening operation on Neville Island in the Ohio
River below Pittsburgh. This was a very productive tract of land but is
now covered by heavy industry and homes. Since the gardening operation
was seasonal, he worked at other jobs during the winter, sometimes as a
deckhand on a river boat, sometimes floating logs to a river sawmill.

Edward McConnell received his United States Citizenship papers in
Pittsburgh on September 25, 1860. The same year he took Eliza Potter as
his wife. Very little is known of her. She died, leaving him with three
small children.
The children were 1. Thomas: 12/6/1861 - 8/24/1880: nm
2. Eliza Jane: 9/29/1864 - 9/7/1871
3. Emma Mary: 2/4/1867 - 5/4/1917: m John
Spence

Thomas, above, died of a hernia that he suffered at a barn raising.
Eliza Jane died as a small child. Emma Mary McConnell married John
Spence, a member of the East Liverpool fire department for many years.
She died following an operation.

Edward McConnell met the woman who was to be his second wife on the
water-front produce market in Pittsburgh. Nancy Anna McCausland taught
school for more than 15 years. She also carried on an unusual business
for a young woman, at anytime, but especially in her day. with the coming
of the railroad into Carrol County, Ohio, she gathered up butter, eggs,
meat, fruit, potatoes and other vegetables and took them to Pittsburgh to
market. She sold them herself during the late spring, summer and fall.
She acted as agent for her neighbors. This was possible, since a four
month school year was common in rural areas of Ohio until the 1880's. She
taught school in Columbiana County about a mile from the site of
Morgan's surrender. She was born in 1837 in Carroll county, daughter of
James and Mary (Hunter) McCausland.

Edward McConnell and Nancy Anna McCausland were married November
19,1868 at her father's home, near what is now known as Washington Hall,
East of Carrollton. The next spring he took over management of half Moon
Farm, a vegetable farm across the Ohio River from Steubenville. For a
year he managed a big vegetable garden where the Steubenville country is
now located. Next he bought a steep, very poor hill farm in Brooke
County, West Virginia. It was located upriver from Steubenville and
within sight of the river. Four of their children were born there. He
sold it and bought the Wintersville farm in 1877. This last farm is where
the family grew up. He later bought the ajoining farm, part of which was
later owned by Charles McConnell, a grandson.

Edward sold the first sweet corn in Steubenville, each year for 25
years or more. He grew a wide variety of vegetables and small fruits,
which he sold in the Ohio river towns. He burned his own limestone and
used the first commerercial fertilizer in the community. The analysis of
this fertilizer was 1-2-2 and it came in 500 pound barrels. His
cultivated crops were planted in contur strip, probably not quite as it
is done today, but much differently than most of his neighbors.
Financially he was quite successful. He left a productive farm and a nice
estate when he died November 19, 1896. His wife died on July 22, 1911.
They are buried in Union Cemetery in Steubenville.

Edward McConnell's family were not well educated by today's
standards, but better than the average in their times. Margaret and Anna
attended Normal School at Richmond. Ross took a short course in farm
management at Ohio State University. Joseph attended an auctioneer's
school for a time. None of the family were particularily bashful, they
were married somewhat later in life than was common in their time. They
were all past 31 years of age at the time they were married except Anna,
who was 26.

Notes

Thomas McConnell is first seen in the 1830 census, Virginia Twp,
Coshocton County, Ohio. He is listed as 30-40, as is his wife.
There is 1 male under 5 (Jacob McConnell), 1 female under 5 and
2 females 5-10.

He is still in Virginia Twp in 1840. He is 40-50 and is his wife.
There are 2 males under 5, 2 males 5-10, and 1 male 10-15 (Jacob).
There is also a female 10-15 and 2 females 15-20.

Jacob McConnell, Thomas' son, married on April 13, 1852 in Defiance
County, Ohio.

In the 1850 census he disappears. However he is found in the land
records of Farmer Twp, Defiance County, OH on June 1, 1853. He is
listed as Thomas M. Connelly. He purchased 40 acres and the legal
description is: 1 SESW 1st PPM No. 4N 2E 3. On the same section
of land is Abraham Bowman, who came from Stark County, Ohio. The
Bowmans are linked to the McConnells in many places. In Stark Co.
Ohio James McConnell was married to a Hannah Bowman. In Scioto Co.
Ohio John McConnell was married to a Barbara Bowman. These
McConnells purchased land in Shelby Co., Illinois at Dry Point Twp
under the name of Elizabeth McConnell. Abraham McConnell was there
for a short while but he was killed in the Civil War. The Bowmans
came from Fayette Co., PA as did the McConnells.

Also living in Farmer Twp, Defiance Co., OH was the family of Lovimes
Bronson. In the 1850 census there was a girl in the family named
Anna E. Bronson. This is the same name as Thomas McConnell's wife.

I believe that Thomas McConnell probably died in Defiance County, OH.
Then Jacob McConnell traveled to Shelby County, Illinois and his uncle
John McConnell, who lived in Xenia Twp, Clay County, Illinois, assisted
Jacob in purchased land for him in Cold Springs, Shelby Co., IL in 1855.
Since John McConnell purchased the land in his own name, this caused
much confusion about the identity of Jacob McConnell's father.
