INDEX

Notes

He was listed in Rostraver Township in Westmoreland County in 1772.

In 1772, and until Westmoreland County was established in 1773, Bedford County encompassed all of southwestern Pennsylvania.
All of present Fayette County east of a straight line from the mouth of Redstone to the mouth of Jacob's Creek consisted of two townships, Springhill and Tyrone. Here, the division line was Redstone Creek, from its mouth to where it was crosse d by Burd's Road, and from Burd's Road to Gist's, then Braddock's Road to the Great Crossing. That part of Fayette County, northwest of Redstone to the mouth of Jacob's Creek, was a part of Rostraver Township.
The counties of Greene and Washington, west of Fayette, were evidently included in Springhill.

Notes

William Porter was born sometime between 1760 and 1763 in Donegal, Ireland.
Most sources say he was born 1763 but the 1850 census record shows his age as
90. His profession on the 1850 census is listed as "weaver," which may have
been his occupation before moving to America. Having an Irish weaver in the
family is interesting because there are many descendants with a special
interest in weaving and textiles, including one with a PHD in antique textiles.

According to Africa's History of Huntingdon County, William Porter purchased
140 acres of land in Henderson Township, Huntingdon Co., PA. around 1800.
William Porter divided the land between his two sons, James and John, before
he died December 15, 1850 while living on the farm of John Porter, his son.

William's first wife died August 17, 1827 in Henderson Township, Huntingdon,
PA. He married again, probably to Mrs. Mary Johnson of Shaver's Creek, on
June 2, 1829. The 1830 census records show a woman, aged 50-60 living with
William Porter, aged 70-80 in Henderson Township, Huntingdon, PA. In the 1840
census records, a woman of this age is no longer with William, which probably
means Mary Johnson Porter died between 1830 and 1840.
