Notes
According to a DNA analysis done through Family Tree DNA as part of the
Clan Donald DNA project, all of the male descendants of this family
are direct descendants of Somerled, the founder of what became the
MacDonald Clan. By the end of his lifetime in 1166 Somerled had driven
the Vikings out of Northern Ireland and Western Scotland. Somerled was
also of Viking ancestry, as was his wife, who was the daughter of a
Viking king and a cousin of William the Conqueror.
In the Shelby County OH 1860 census there is a John McConnell, born 1827,
who is listed as "Jno" in that census, with his wife Mary J. and his children
Samuel, Malona and Jacob R. This Jonathan McConnell is listed near Jacob
McConnell on the census. In the court records of Shelby County, IL, we
find that on April 10, 1857 John W. McConnell, Jacob McConnell and John
Smith were accused of the crime of gaming, which is described as "playing
at cards for money." In the records that were repeated attempts to locate
these three people, which they finally did after two and half years. The
people who finally paid their bail were the people that these three knew who
had the money-- John McConnell (I believe the father of Jacob McConnell,
Moses Spurgeon (who lived near Jacob McConnell in the 1860 census, and
Wesley King, who is listed immediately next to Jonathan McConnell. Most
likely Jonathan McConnell worked for Wesley King. I think the John W.
McConnell was Jonathan McConnell. The fact that they were arrested
together and lived in the same township suggests a relationship.
In 1862 John W. Mcconnell joined the Civil War as a private. His roster
records show he was born in Greene County, PA about 1830. He endured in
the Civil War for the entire period. About a third of his unit deserted
and another third were killed or severely wounded. He was among the one
third of his unit who was honorably discharged. Unfortunately this family
was not healthy and most of the members died of disease at early ages.
Two surviving grandchildren, children of Samuel McConnell, George McConnell
and his sister Ollie moved to Missouri where George McConnell had a harness
factory. They died with no offspring.
Since we know that Jonathan McConnell was born in 1827 in Greene Co., PA,
we can look at the 1830 census and find his parents. There were two McCon-
nells listed together in the 1830 census, in Aleppo Twp, Greene Co. PA. One
was John McConnell, age 70-79, with his wife also 70-79. On his census
record there is one male McConnell under the age of 5. Given his age and
the age of his wife (also 70-79) it is certain that the child is a son of
one of the males aged 20-29, and the child under the age of 5 is a grandson.
Also in the family of William McConnell, who was 40-49, there are two children
under the age of 5. So Jonathan McConnell is one of these three children.
William McConnell, who was 40-49, was almost certainly a son of John Mcconnell.
So regardless of which of the three children Jonathan McConnell was, we can
be fairly sure that his grandfather was John Mcconnell, born 1750-1759.
If we assume that Jacob and John are cousins, this shows that their common
grandfather was John McConnell.
There is a marriage record of Sarah McConnell, described as a daughter of
John McConnell who married Jacob Miller on July 1, 1830. Jacob Miller
lived in Aleppon Twp, Greene Co., PA and later moved to Springfield Twp
of the same county. They had at least nine children who appear in the
1850 and 1860 census records.
There is a biography of a Nancy McConnell in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
She was born in Greene County, PA, daughter of a Benjamin McConnell. He was
almost certainly the son of John McConnell since he would be the right age
and the only McConnells listed in the census in Greene County, PA in 1830
were John McConnell and his son William.
Benjamin's name enables us to find a link to where John McConnell and William
came from. In the 1820 census, Luzerne Twp, Greene Co., PA. Benjamin McConnell's
name was listed and then cross off and John McConnell's name was placed above it.
It is like the census taker first assumed that Benjamin McConnell was the head of
household, wrote down his name, and then crossed it off when he learned that
John McConnell was the head of household.
The records of John McConnell in Luzerne, Fayette County, PA, go back to the
very first census in 1790.
William McConnell appears to have moved to Bristol Twp, Morgan County, OH,
near McConnellsville in 1840. From there he moved to Ironton, Mason Twp,
Lawrence Co., Ohio in 1850.
Jonathan/John McConnell was in Coshocton County, OH, Tuscarara Twp in 1850,
listed as John McConnell with his wife, Mary Jane Haney and his first son
Samuel McConnell recently born.
There is a family story that John W. McConnell once got in a fight with a
giant Swede at a dance. The Swede grabbed him by the coattails and swung
him around his head. This story was much enjoyed by many generations of
McConnells.
In 1855 John McConnell, purchased 80 acres of federal land for $200 at
Cold Springs Township, Shelby Co., IL on Sept 17, 1855. The legal descrip-
tion for the two pieces of land is SWNW and NWSW Section 29, Township 10N,
Range 02E, Meridian 3. It is land at the junction of Stoney Creek and
Beck's Creek. This land, along with an additional 40 acres purchased
by Boseal McConnell on 11/26/1879 stayed in the McConnell family for slightly
over 72 years. It was sold after the death of Thomas McConnell, Jacob
McConnell's son, who died in 1927.
Other than the land record, which matches land held in the family, I can
find no other record for John McConnell and there is no record of what
happened to him. The land records do not show a transfer of title to
Jacob McConnell. There was no record of probate or any will or a
tombstone.
