Notes

From: The Francis McConnell Descendents in United States by George McConnell

Francis McConnell ws born about 1811 in the vicinity of Belfast, Ireland. It is thought that his
father was a vegetable gardner. Really, very little is known about him and nothing of his ancestry.
What is recorded here, was gathered over a period of several years, from talks with his grandsons
who all remembered him. He was a vegetable gardener. He produced vegetables for the Belfast
Fair (market). He also fattened sheep during the fall and winter on leaves and other waste from the
preparation of his produce for market. This helped him in two ways, since he bought thin sheep
at a low price and sold them in the spring when they were fat at a much higher price. He also
had the manure for his land.

Francis McConnell married Mary Smiley. Nothing is known of her ancestry, the date of her
birth, or even the date of their marriage or the date of her death. As was common, they were
both in their teens when they married. She died in her mid thirties. This was common also.
The family of Francis and Mary (Smiley) McConnell is know to have included six children although
there may have been more.

The potato famines in the 1820s and the 1840s were a real hardship in all Ireland. Like many
parents, Francis urged his children to come to the United States. Four of his children were among
the 300,000 Irish immigrants who came to this country during the 1850s. Francis would not let
Sarah go alone, so her brother came with her. His name is recored above as William, but it is
not known for sure. He stayed only a year or two and then returned to Ireland. Their sons
remembered Edward and Thomas saying, "Waaly gawt the bawlie-aache and waent back to
Ireland."

Francis McConnell's wife, Mary, had died prior to Edward's trip to America. Their onder daughter,
Eliza, had taken her mother's place. With her marriage to James McCaulley, she soon had a
family of ther own to think about. This probably influenced Edward, Thomas and Sarah toward
coming to America. It certainly must have relieved the family situation at home, since the all
lived in a rather small house. Francis would not let his youngest son come to America since
he wanted him to continue the family gardening business. Eliza's son, James McCaulley, Jr.
did come over to this country and stayed a couple years. He was remembered by his cousins
for the spotted calfskin vest that he wore everywhere, winter or summer.

When Francis McConnell was past 75 years old, he came to visit his sons. He stayed three
years. He spent much of the time with his son, Edward, on the farm near Winterville. He was
remembered by his grandsons as being about five feet seven inches tall with a ruddy complexion,
barrel chested and mostly bald. He enjoyed cock fights, which were illegal even then. He walked
as much as ten miles to watch a cock fight with his friends and to bet on the outcome. He was
pushed or fell into the Ohio River when a raid interrupted a fight and the lights were doused one
cold November night in 1889. He was unable to swim. He was fished out in the dark and hauled
home in an open wagon with his clothes frozen stiff. He got pnuemonia and would have died
but for his determination to get back to Ireland. There he lived the last three years of his life
and died in 1893, in his 83rd year.
